Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) represent the leading cause of death globally, accounting for over 70% of all deaths, many of which are premature and preventable. These include cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory conditions, diabetes, and mental health disorders. DFGAHO has made combating NCDs a top priority, recognizing that their rising burden threatens global development, economic stability, and health equity.

The causes of NCDs are often linked to behavioral and environmental risk factors: tobacco use, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, harmful use of alcohol, and exposure to pollution. DFGAHO leads efforts to address these risk factors through policy advocacy, technical assistance, and regulatory guidance. It works with governments to introduce national action plans for NCD prevention and control, which may include implementing tobacco taxes, front-of-package food labeling, urban planning for physical activity, and restrictions on harmful substances.

DFGAHO also supports early detection and screening programs, especially for high-risk populations, as well as integration of NCD management into primary healthcare systems. The organization emphasizes patient education, community involvement, and culturally appropriate health messaging to increase awareness and encourage long-term lifestyle changes.

Mental health, long neglected in many health systems, is now a core component of DFGAHO’s NCD strategy. The organization works to reduce stigma, expand access to mental health care, and integrate mental health services into universal coverage frameworks.

By tackling the root causes of NCDs and promoting preventive care, DFGAHO reduces healthcare costs, enhances quality of life, and strengthens national health systems’ ability to cope with long-term disease burdens.
