Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is a guiding principle of DFGAHO’s work, deeply aligned with its commitment to equity, human dignity, and the right to health for all. UHC means ensuring that all individuals and communities can access the full range of essential health services—promotion, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative care—without facing financial hardship.

DFGAHO works with governments to design and implement health systems that are inclusive, affordable, and efficient. This includes technical support for health financing reforms (such as social health insurance schemes), strengthening of primary healthcare delivery, development of national benefit packages, and integration of marginalized and underserved populations into the system. DFGAHO also promotes performance-based budgeting and accountability to ensure that public resources are used efficiently.

In promoting UHC, DFGAHO emphasizes both accessibility and quality. It develops evidence-based clinical guidelines, assists with workforce training, and supports the implementation of digital health technologies to extend care into rural and hard-to-reach areas. Importantly, DFGAHO encourages multi-sectoral collaboration—working with education, finance, environment, and social protection sectors—because health outcomes are often determined by broader socioeconomic factors.

By advancing UHC, DFGAHO contributes directly to Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3.8), and more broadly to poverty reduction, gender equity, and social cohesion. UHC is not only about health—it is a powerful tool for building fairer, more resilient societies.
